Etiquette, Etiquette, Etiquette; Wedding Party Gift Giving

Why is it important to give the wedding party gifts?

Think of it this way—your bridesmaids are majorly putting themselves out for you, and you owe it to them to show your gratitude by gifting them properly. Many brides give out gifts during rehearsal dinner. Following the main course, dessert is served and the toast begins. Just so you know, it is customary for the best man to start toasting the couple. Afterward, you can acknowledge your attendants and give them their gifts.

Giving thoughtful gifts to your wedding party and important loved ones, like your parents, is the best way to thank them for being key players in your wedding—and in life. But when do you actually hand them out? While there are no strict rules when it comes to the timing of gift-giving, here's a breakdown of when most couples traditionally choose to present each person with something special.

True friendships are priceless. However, being a bridesmaid or groomsman is not. The wedding party typically shells out hundreds of dollars for bachelor/bachelorette parties, suits, gowns, showers, and more. It can add up quickly, and while those who value your friendship and champion your relationship are usually happy to spend it (knowing you would do the same for them), giving your wedding party a gift is a great way for couples to thank your loved ones for all that they’re doing to celebrate this momentous occasion in your life. Wedding party gifts are a symbol of your appreciation for all that your bridesmaids, groomsman, and even other family members do for you all year long and on the wedding weekend.

What would you spend on a wedding party gift?

It depends, but the pricepoint should reflect the budget of the overall wedding. If you’re having a small backyard get-together with 50 of your closest friends and family, a small token of appreciation should suffice. If you’re having a five-star destination wedding, take into account the additional expense your wedding party is incurring to be part of your special day, and thank them accordingly with a generous gift.

For bridesmaids and groomsmen, as we find the most average price point is $25-$75, and for best man and maid of honor $75-$100. For specialty items with personalization or luxurious types of robes, this price point certainly can go up. Keep in mind that the best man and maid of honor are usually the backbone of the bride and groom through the wedding process.
